girl in red
A leading figure of streaming-era bedroom pop, Marie Ulven writes and produces lo-fi, diaristic songs full of fuzz and feeling. Born in Horten, Norway, in 1999, Ulven began her music career at age 14, teaching herself guitar, piano and music production. Her 2016 debut release, “i wanna be your girlfriend”, became a viral hit after she uploaded it herself, and two years later she released her debut EP, chapter 1, which collected “girlfriend” and other heavily streamed gems, including the brisk “4am” and the swirling “girls”. In 2019, girl in red released chapter 2, a darker, more melancholy EP highlighted by the speedy “bad idea!” and the existential, hooky “dead girl in the pool”. Ulven embarked on her first headlining tour that year after stints supporting fellow bedroom-pop travellers Clairo and Conan Gray. Ulven’s biting humour and openness about the ups and downs of love helped put girl in red at the forefront of bedroom pop and LGBTQ music in the late 2010s; the singles she released in 2020 in advance of her debut full-length album, including the sparkling Christmas song “two queens in a king sized bed”, cemented her place in both worlds.
