YG Marley
Joshua Nesta “YG” Marley told the world “I wanna rap” aged nine during a 2012 concert by his mother, Lauryn Hill. He was born in Beverly Hills to Hill and football player Rohan Marley—one of Bob Marley’s sons—and made that dream a reality in his late teens when he began working on music of his own. In late 2023, YG released the single “Praise Jah In the Moonlight”, which samples “Crisis”, his grandfather’s 1978 track with The Wailers, and shares its uplifting spirit. His perceptive lyrics are reminiscent of Hill’s, while his voice carries a hint of Bob’s weathered timbre. YG’s vocal runs and creative end-rhyme enunciations imbue his reggae style with hints of modern R&B. He first performed “Praise Jah In the Moonlight”, co-written with Hill, at her live shows. The song drew so much attention that he officially released it to fanfare and worldwide chart success, becoming the sixth member of the Marley family to enter the U.S. Billboard chart.
